Colorguard members preform at half time on senior night.

Every Friday night home game is full of entertainment with band, cheerleaders, and THS color-guard. Along with the band, color guard performs and travels to competitions. While students may think of color guard as just another element of the half-time performance, ask any of the members of color guard and they will tell you it’s more than that.

Color-guard is a difficult and complex sport. In order to perform, one must memorize a set of moves and skillfully toss and twirl a six-foot flag. Members of the sport are faced with difficult offsets to the movements. It is very easy to drop or lose control of the flag. It takes hard work and a lot of practice to master a routine.

The eight students involved in color guard do not just do it for fun either. Just like most after school activities and sports, they travel to compete in competitions with other teams. THS color guard has brought home several first place prizes and had traveled to as far as Bassett to perform and compete.

“Our biggest achievement would have to be winning first place in a 3A competition,” co-captain Lauren Jackson said.

Rhythmic routines like the ones performed can only be done with no flaws or troubles by practicing them repeatedly. Dedication is necessary when joining such an activity. The members practice every day of the week except for Wednesday. They even practice on Saturdays sometimes.

These members rehearse for almost 3 hours and must stay focused on their task at hand.

Co-captain Lauren Jackson and Emma Hale teach the seven routines they perform.

What makes the practices interesting is that their instructor lives all the way in Arizona. He sends videos of routines to learn. After the videos are sent, Jackson and Hale must watch and memorize the routine to teach it to the other six members. Their hope is an outstanding performance later in the week.
