The boys receive their trophy with excitement at their last match.

Last year, the wrestling team finished with a successful record of 23-3. One wrestler in particular that led the way for the Trojans was Matt Fulcher, who represented Tunstall in the state championships last year. Unfortunately, Fulcher will miss part of the season due to a torn ACL back in October while playing football. Despite the injury, Fulcher is looking forward to getting back to wrestling and being on the mat for his senior year.

Although the team will be lacking one of their best wrestlers, coach Randy Hunsicker is optimistic about the upcoming season.

“I’m looking forward to see how they develop this year,” said Hunsicker. “We have a lot have of new wrestlers and I want them to improve every week. The wrestlers that have experience, I want to see them improve from good wrestlers to great wrestlers.”

Recently, the Trojans finished fifth place in the Cody Day Invitational at the Hargrave Military Academy. Despite finishing fifth, they defeated Piedmont District rival Dan River as a team; but lost to county rival Chatham and fellow district rival Bassett.

The team also had a difficult match held at Tunstall on Saturday, Dec. 10. The Trojans came in first and team members hope this will continue as they are looking forward to more wins.

According to coach Hunsicker, the team has a challenging schedule, facing teams like Basset, Halifax County, and Martinsville in the upcoming weeks.

To prepare the team for matches, coach Hunsicker tells them what to expect for the week, how to prepare for it, and what goals need to be met.

“We have a lot of new people and they’re going to learn moves to better themselves. It’s going to be a good season,” said sophomore Ryan Bartley.
