If you give a kindergarten student art time: Brandon Harris’ development as an artist

“It all started when we did arts and crafts because that’s when I started coloring and painting,” said freshman Brandon Harris.

Harris started doing artwork in kindergarten. Ever since then, he has loved all things related to drawing, painting, and coloring.

Harris’ ultimate goal is to design pictures for Disney after graduating high school. He has always enjoyed drawing Disney characters.

His family has been influential in his confidence and inspiration as an artist. Just about everyone in his family is an artist. They have been very supportive of his dream of becoming a professional artist.

“My mother inspired me the most out of everyone,” said Harris.

She showed him all the work she had created in high school and it made him want to work even harder at reaching his goals. She encouraged him to continue drawing because she believes he has a gift.

Harris doesn’t care for fancy or expensive materials. He likes to keep it simple by using the same materials today as he used in kindergarten.

“All I need is a pen and paper,” said Harris. “I guess it’s because I used those same materials when I was younger, so I could never just give up using that stuff and they just became a part of my style.”

Harris creates artwork daily. After school, he goes home and draws.

“I like to paint in the afternoon because that’s when I can take my time, plus it’s not too early or late,” he said.

Although his favorite things to draw are superheroes and anime characters, he enjoys drawing whatever comes to mind.

“I draw everything: people, nature, etc. because I see everything as a form of art so I  wanted to portray that in my own unique way.”

Harris enjoys showing his artwork to fellow students and other people in the community. He hopes to draw something for THS one day.

“I want to leave [Trojans] with something before I graduate so I can be remembered and get my artwork out,” said Harris.
