Shakespeare abridged…and revised!

On April 10-12, the drama department performed The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged and Revised.

The play itself was a collection of plays written by Shakespeare. Therefore, the setting of the play performed by the drama department changed with each play. The stage setting, however, remained the same, with two upraised platforms, a “narrator’s” chair, a banner displaying the name of the play, and props in cardboard boxes, which the cast took from as needed.

The cast went by their real names, and the only onstage names used were the names of the character the cast took on within each Shakespearean play.

The best actors within the cast were either sophomore Dwight Tate, or senior Caitlyn Owen and sophomore Rachel Hayes. Dwight brought mostly comedy, taking on all female roles, while also bringing onstage humor throughout each play. However, Rachel and Caitlyn complimented each other extremely well, with near-perfect synchronization with their movements and delivering lines.

The costumes worn by the cast were a mixture of Elizabethean clothes with new. Each member wore a t-shirt bearing a Shakespearean quote, while their bottoms were what one would normally associate with the time of Shakespeare.

The play flowed well with speaking in between each Shakesperean play. However, sometimes these transitions distracted from the Shakesperean aspect.

The best scene on April 12 was when the cast performed Hamlet. Or, more specifically, performed it four times, at varying speeds, and even backwards.

In all, the play deserved a five-star rating, and a huge “yes” as to whether one should go see it.
