The Trojans took to the road a night earlier than usual to take on in-county rival Chatham, due to Hurricane Florence. In front of a mainly Tunstall crowd, the Trojans rained on the Cavs parade, walking out with a win by a score of 49-20.

The big plays started early for the Trojans, with senior Grayson Hardy returning the opening kickoff past midfield, which helped set up a Trojan touchdown a few plays later, putting them up 7-0 following a three yard run from senior running back Clay Hardy. After a strong defensive showing, the Trojans took over again on offense deep in enemy territory, and after four plays, sophomore Dylan Burnett hit senior Joce Covington for a 12 yard touchdown, making the score 14-0 and ending the scoring for the 1st quarter.

The second quarter brought a lot of the same for the Trojans, who dropped 28 points in the quarter alone. The scoring started when Hardy ran it for a six yard touchdown, his second of the night. Following a big Cavalier turnover deep in their own territory, Tunstall scored on the following play on yet another Hardy rushing touchdown from 12 yards out, bringing his total on the night to three, and running the lead up to 28-0. The Cavs finally got on the board at about the eight minute mark in the second, cutting into the Trojan lead and making the score 28-7. The Trojans would add two more scores to their total with two more rushing touchdowns, one from junior Will Blackwell and another from Hardy, bringing his total to four, and putting the Trojans ahead 42-7 headed into the half.

The third quarter was much slower paced, with the Cavs landing the first blow, scoring on the first possession of the half, running around seven minutes off the clock, once again cutting into the Trojan lead, which dropped to 42-14. After the kickoff, the Trojans set up shop at the Cavs’ 40 yard line, and Hardy, on the first play of the drive, took it all the way to the house, bringing his touchdown total to five for the game, and increasing the lead to 49-14.

The only real action in the fourth was a Chatham pass that was intercepted by junior Donovan Dickerson, a fumble by the Trojans and a last gasp effort resulting in another Cavalier touchdown, which would ultimately settle the score at 49-20.

Leading the way offensively for the Trojans was Clay Hardy, who behind a stellar showing from the O-Line, had a career night with 261 yards on 25 carries and five touchdowns, which helped him take home the Player of the Game award. Defensively, they were led by Marquise Wimbush, Aaron Cook, Grayson Hardy and Donovan Dickerson with an interception each, and Cook also had six tackles. In total, the Trojans racked up 603 yards on the night.

With the win, the Trojans move to 2-1 on the year and are on the road for the second week in a row next week September 21 against Halifax. Kickoff is at 7 PM.
