Mr. Lloyd leaves teaching and moves on to car business

As this year comes to an end, many students will be saying their goodbyes to Tunstall High School.  Not only will seniors be faced with this bittersweet moment, but Mr. Eddy Lloyd will be retiring after teaching at Tunstall for twenty-three years.

Mr. Lloyd has taught at the high school level throughout most of his teaching career. He spent one year teaching at a middle school.  Through the years he has taught at Tunstall High School, Trinity High School, Chatham High School, and NW Guilford Middle School.  “I think as a teacher/coach you have a chance to influence young people in a positive way, but it becomes more difficult without the day to day contact,” said Lloyd.

Everyone knows Mr. Lloyd as a practical joker. He has had many humorous memories throughout his years as a teacher, but there is one that he specifically remembers.  “I got Coach Shelton’s class to come into my room one day when he had gone to the restroom.  He came back and did not know where his students were,” he  said.

Many students have really enjoyed having Mr. Lloyd as a teacher.  Senior Brad Hylton said, “His passion for each student shows through his preparation and planning for each day.”

Not only is Mr. Lloyd a dedicated teacher, but he also has a passion for coaching.  As one roams the halls, he or she may notice that Mr. Lloyd is often referred to as Coach Lloyd.  This is because he has coached JV baseball, JV football, JV basketball, Varsity football, Varsity basketball, track, and boys’ soccer.  “All sports have elements of their games that are very appealing to me. I love to see teamwork in every sport,” said Lloyd.   One thing that Coach Lloyd really enjoyed about coaching is that he still has relationships with players that he coached more than thirty years ago.

Although Coach Lloyd is retiring from teaching, he is not retiring from working.  Starting in July, he will be working full time with Barkhouser Ford. Also he plans to take any available coaching jobs if they are offered to him. “I am always looking to coach and if the right opportunity comes around, I will go after it,” said Lloyd.

Advice that Coach Lloyd would like to offer new teachers is “Be a mentor. Be a role model. Your job doesn’t end at the school house gate.  Be a mentor, a role model wherever you are.”
