Blake Mitchell is a freshman in high school. He is a member of the band and is a drum major. He said, “Being a drum major is a tough job. Although it’s rewarding, there are times that are just as hard as they are fun.” He said that he’s always had a love for music since middle school because it made him feel right at home. Mitchell said he can play the piano, the baritone, the trumpet, and the guitar.

Outside of school, Mitchell is quite active. He is a part of his church’s youth group and does many community service projects like visiting nursing homes, doing yardwork for residents, or cleaning uproads. He also has a love for the theatre. In the past, Mitchell was in Beauty and the Beast as the character of Lumiere. There was singing and dancing involved also. Mitchell often sings at his church which helped him be able to sing in his performances. He also does some dancing in the theatre. Although he didn’t speak about it much, he mostly dances while doing a performance.

Mitchell has personal goals and dreams just like anyone else. He said, “The thought of being successful in life is what motivates me to pursue my dreams.” Some of his goals include graduating from college, moving to New York, and opening his music therapy practice. Mitchell said his love for music made him want to become a music therapist. He said, “I want to attend UVA and major in music therapy in order to help kids to cope with their disabilities through music.” Growing up he knew a boy with down syndrome. Mitchell said, “Whenever he came to church, he loved to hear the music. This is what inspired me to become a music therapist.”

“I would tell younger kids to follow their dreams. No matter what people tell you, always follow your dreams and never give up!”
