Getting to know the Legendary Montana Midkiff

Getting+to+know+the+Legendary+Montana+Midkiff

Ms. Midkiff, our amazing art teacher, went to Radford University and majored in art education. She was inspired to go to this college because her brother went there. The reason Ms. Midkiff chose THS was because her mom currently works for Pittsylvania County Schools, and she influenced her daughter into working for this county as well.

Ms. Midkiff’s inspiration to teach art began in high school with her art teacher. “I loved her so much; I wanted to be just like her when I grew up,” Midkiff said.

In Art 1, Midkiff’s students are learning about Pablo Picasso’s art movement known as “Cubism.” They are also learning about color theory, which is the art of combining colors based on the color wheel. It’s an organized illustration of the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

In Art 2, Ms. Midkiff’s students are working on making stuffed animals out of the monsters that Stony Mill Elementary School students drew. Once they’re done, they will give the plush toys back to the elementary school students.

To Ms. Midkiff art means having the creative freedom to express oneself. Her favorite part about teaching art is watching students, of all grades, coming together and making friendships that wouldn’t normally happen if it weren’t for her class. “I like that there’s a community made up of underclassmen and upperclassmen,” Midkiff said.

“I think students should take art so they’re able to problem solve and think on their feet,” Midkiff mentioned.

Please make sure to swing by art and take a look at all the beautiful artwork that Ms. Midkiff and her students have worked so hard on. Also, If anyone is interested in taking art next year, please make sure to add this class to your schedule!
