Prom is this weekend, and I am beyond thrilled. I love prom. When I say this, I mean it. Some people say it’s awkward or too expensive (and I agree), but when all is said and done, there is nothing more amazing in this world than dress shopping, getting ready for school dances, and listening to crappy music with a bunch of random people from school.
When someone tells me they don’t have plans to attend prom due to the expenses, I immediately start explaining the surplus of solutions. There are a ton of ways to make prom cheaper. Get your outfit second hand, make your own corsage and boutonniere, and do your own hair and makeup. Most people like to be pampered and treated to all of these extravagant prom preparations, but you can treat yourself without breaking the bank.
I’ve been to every single school dance THS has offered during my high school years and each one has been better than the last. There’s something almost magical about it. There is a certain type of excitement that only prom can bring. Even though the dance is typically in April or May, I try to start planning for prom in November.
I make a million Pinterest boards, photoshop dresses together, and scout out makeup looks for MONTHS. If there’s one thing even more fun than prom, it’s just the planning process. Shopping for prom dresses or new makeup products to prepare for the big day can be just as fun, if not more fun, than the dance itself.
When it comes to the awkwardness of the dance, this is to be expected. This is an amalgamation of people, who for the most part, only have one thing in common and that’s that they all go to the same school. Of COURSE it’s going to be awkward. But as the night goes on and the students relax and start dancing, a fun time can be had by all. That weird feeling is temporary!
Once the dance floor fills up, the night instantly changes from middle-school-dance atmosphere to “club”. The lights go off, people are dancing, and as soon as Waka Flocka Flames “No Hands” starts playing, people Lose. Their. Minds.
Not only do I love prom and prom planning, but I love the after-prom parties. What’s better than getting out of those formal clothes and hanging out with your friends? Prom also gives you the opportunity to make unforgettable memories. Prom is 1000% worth it, and everyone should go to prom at least once in their high school career.
