Holland Dalton: Originality is key

February 26, 2016

Choosing to stand out and be bold takes a major amount of confidence.

Holland Dalton is known for her eccentric hair and on-point makeup skills. Being a natural dirty blonde, Holland had a self-admitted “crazy” obsession with One Direction’s hairstylist who had lilac colored hair. After dyeing her hair the same color, Holland has dyed her hair other colors including: red, blue, pink, lilac, lime green, and purple. She plans on sticking with the bleached look for now.

To achieve her specific hair style, Holland does a number of things; she dyes the colors together, her cousin does the bleaching, and she goes to a barber downtown to touch up the shave. “Let’s just say I spend way more than the average teenage girl,” stated Holland.

Holland started wearing makeup in the second grade only using “crazy” blue eyeshadow. Soon after she started, her second grade teacher told her to stop; saying, “Stop using that please, Holland”. She then waited until 5th grade only wearing eyeliner and mascara.

Even with the disapproval of a teacher, her parents, on the other hand, had a much different reaction. Her mother encourages her to be outrageous and to stand out. “She has always told me to go all out with myself and that going over the top isn’t a bad thing.”

She learned how to execute her distinctive look by simply watching Youtube makeup tutorials. “Whatever I see online, I take it and make it my own,” says Holland. Her style ranges anywhere from the Kardashians to 90’s grunge.

When confronted with the question, “Where does your confidence come from?” Holland responded, “I make myself go out of my comfort zone and accept myself for who I am, rather than having an insecurity about my appearance.”
