The Walking Dead eats up fans’ emotions

October 25, 2016

The Walking Dead has been on television for a total of seven years now. Since its kickoff in late 2010, people have madly fallen in love with the hit show on AMC. The last season had fans guessing and wondering who would be killed by the infamous bat “Lucille” that Negan carried around. For six months, fans have been worried about who would be killed off this season, which lead to many controversial theories created in the time of waiting: “Maybe the show followed the footsteps of the comic book,” or “Maybe Negan killed two or three people instead of one.” People have discussed with one another about the biggest cliff hanger the fans have ever witnessed on the show. After all the waiting and anxiousness, the answers were finally revealed last night. Millions upon millions of people tuned in to watch The Walking Dead hoping and praying their favorite character survived through the tragic night.

The episode starts with Rick in shock and awe of what he has just witnessed. They don’t show us who dies until after the second commercial break. It was very brutal. Rick lost two of his right hand men, Glenn and Abraham, both who were big characters in the show. Negan chose Abraham to kill by playing the classic game of “Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Mo.” Daryl attacked Negan, leading to Glenn’s death. Negan told them he wanted to be remembered, so to be remembered, he killed Glenn. The last words he said were heartbreaking. The words were for his wife Maggie, who was carrying their child. He says, “I’ll find you.” He means even though he’ll be gone, he’ll find them and protect them no matter what.

After both Glenn and Abraham are dead, Rick threatens to kill Negan by saying, “I’m going to kill you. Not today, not tomorrow, but someday I’m going to kill you.” Negan takes Rick and tries to break him down by treating him like an animal. He makes him go fetch his ax surrounded by many walkers. After he collects the ax, realization starts to hit Rick and he starts to break down in tears. He starts to think about what could’ve happened (Negan could’ve killed everyone) and what could still happen (Negan could still kill everyone). Negan then tells him, “You are mine now. You can still be a leader by telling your people to follow me.” Then Negan leaves and everyone is dumbfounded by what has all happened in the time span of one night. The episode ends with them leaving and going back home, knowing Negan is going to be back soon.

The effect of this episode is brutal. There were tears, there were jaws dropping, and there were people holding their pets for dear life trying to find comfort during this horrific time. It has been less than 48 hours, and the aftershock of this episode is still very present. The fans of The Walking Dead have never experienced anything like Sunday night. We lost two very important characters that people loved tremendously. It was like losing someone close to you. Watching all seven seasons, one gets very attached to the characters. You watch their everyday lives and it’s almost like you’re a part of it. October 23rd will be a day that The Walking Dead fans will forever remember.
