All-County Chorus concert deemed a success

The Pittsylvania All-County Chorus was held on Feb. 22 at Chatham High School. Middle and high school students from all over the county participated.

The guest conductor for the high school chorus was Mrs. Clarissa Knight. Knight graduated from Chatham High and was able to return to her former school for the concert. Knight completed her musical training at the former Stratford College in Danville with a B.A degree in piano performance. Knight then decided to continue her studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she received her Master’s Degree in Music Education. Knight went on to hold a variety of positions in Pittsylvania County from the classroom to the Central Office.

Along with Knight was pianist Mrs. Leslie Blair.

The song selection for the high school students was diverse, including “Africa,” “Elijah Rock,” “How Can I Keep From Singing,” “She Sings,” and “Singabahambayo.”

The chorus class has been practicing for the concert since January.

For freshman Abby Herndon, this was her first year being apart of All-County Chorus. She said she was a “little anxious” at first, but she ended up thoroughly enjoying it. Her favorite song was “Africa.”

For senior Teaira DeJarnette, this was her second time being in All-County Chorus, although she has been in chorus since 7th grade.

“I used to be anxious, but it’s really just mind over matter. After practicing all day, you know the songs forwards and backwards. I’m not nervous about performing anymore. I’m the most worried about walking on stage and not falling,” said DeJarnette.

When asked what her favorite song was, she said, “It is truly so hard to pick one song, but I think ‘How Can I Keep From Singing’ is my favorite because it’s a super fun song to sing and vibe out to,” she said.

Dr. Anne Lewis was the guest conductor for the middle school performance. Lewis is the chair of the music department at Averett University and a summer faculty member in the musical theatre at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.

The song selection for the middle school chorus was “Cantate Canon”, “CooRoo CooRoo,” “The Storm is Passing Over,” and “Shake the Papaya Down.”

The pianist was Mrs. Heather Perryman, who is the chorus director for THS.

Overall, it was an enjoyable night for audience members and showcased the talent of students across the county.

“It is all about having fun and bringing joy to the audience,” said DeJarnette.
