A guide to making your St. Patrick’s Day worth gold

St. Patrick’s Day is quickly approaching and what is better than celebrating by going “full out” for the holiday? Don’t just sit around all day. Get up, put on your green attire, and make it a Saturday worth remembering.

Here’s everything you need to celebrate this Irish holiday from movies, to recipes, to outfits, and even songs.

Movies:

  1. Luck of the Irish

Any Disney fan will recognize this classic movie. It’s by far one of the best Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOM) ever released. Watch as main character Kyle Johnson discovers his mother is a leprechaun while realizing he, too, is turning into one. He is also trying to take down an evil leprechaun that is trying to take over his family. It is intense and totally worth watching.

      2. Leap Year

This movie is a romantic comedy starring Amy Adams. Main character Anna Brady is disappointed yet again when her long term boyfriend doesn’t ask her to marry him. She discovers that every 29th of February in Ireland, women are allowed to propose to their men and they cannot say no. She travels to Ireland with her “boo” with a plan to ask him to marry her, but finds herself on the wrong side of the island. She may or may not fall in love with another man who just so happens to live in Ireland. It is a hilarious, heartwarming movie that would receive a pot of gold rating if a leprechaun was able to be a movie critic.

  1. One Direction: This Is Us

I mean the only reason this is a St. Patrick’s Day movie is because Niall Horan is Irish. Then again, do you ever need a reason to watch a movie about One Direction? I think not.

  1. Brooklyn

If you want a romantic St. Paddy’s Day, this is the movie for you. This is the most recent movie, just being released three years ago. It follows the life of  an immigrant coming to America from Ireland in the 1950’s who falls in love on the streets of New York City.

Recipes:

  1. Shamrock Shake

As a high school student, sometimes you don’t have enough money to buy food (even if it is only $1.50 for a shake at Mcdonald’s). Here’s an alternative to the shamrock shake and believe me, it’s good. You can adjust the amounts of these ingredients based on how many shakes you want to make.

What you’ll need:

  • Vanilla ice cream           – mint extract
  • milk                                – green food coloring

First, use a blender to mix the ice cream, milk, mint extract, and food coloring together. Blend the ingredients together until it’s smooth. Then, pour the smoothie into a festive cup (or a regular cup). Top it off with whipped cream and a cherry, then enjoy.

  1. No-Bake Lucky Charms Treats

If you love rice krispy treats and cereal, this treat is the one for you.

What you’ll need:

  • bag of marshmallows          – almond bark
  • Butter                                  – green food coloring
  • Lucky Charms cereal

First, get out a pan and spray it with cooking spray so the treat won’t stick. Then, in a cooking bowl, melt five tablespoons of butter over the oven burner. After the butter is melted, add the marshmallows. Stir the marshmallows in the pot until they are almost melted. Remove the marshmallow-butter mixture from the stovetop and add six cups of Lucky Charms and stir. After that, pour the mixture into the pan and let it cool for 30 minutes. While the treats are cooling, microwave the almond bark as directed and add green food coloring to it. Cut the Lucky Charms treats into squares and dip the squares into the green almond bark. Leave them to dry and then enjoy.

  1. Shamrock-shaped Cookies

This is probably the easiest recipe on the list. If you’ve got important things to do on St. Patty’s Day, like finding all your friends to pinch or competing in an Irish jig competition, but still want to make a treat, this is really quick to make.

What you’ll need:

  • Butter                              – instant pistachio pudding mix
  • One egg                          – white sugar
  • Cookie baking mix          – shamrock cookie cutter

First, preheat your oven and mix together the pudding mix, butter, egg, and cookie mix. After that, roll the dough out and use the shamrock shaped cookie cutter to make the shape of the cookies. Then, place the cookies on the pan and put them into the oven for about 10 minutes. Lastly, if you so desire, frost the cookies with green frosting for the shamrock effect.

Songs:

1. “Galway Girl” by Ed Sheeran

This song is about an Irish girl he meets in Galway, Ireland. It has a slightly annoying, but catchy tune that will make you want to get up and dance your best jig.

2. “Carrickfergus” covered by Charlotte Church

If you want to hear a phenomenal singer, Charlotte Church is your girl. “Carrickfergus” is an Irish folk song written about a town in Northern Ireland. The song is beautiful, Church’s voice is beautiful, and the music video is even more beautiful, set in a vibrant forest.

3. “Sing Irishmen Sing” by Corrib Folk

This is about the most traditional song you can find for St. Patrick’s Day. I don’t know about you, but it makes me want to board a plane to an Irish party right now.

4. “The Green Hills of Kerry” by Dublin City Ramblers

This is another traditional song that had the same effect on me as #3.

5. Any Niall Horan song

You know, because he’s Irish.

Outfits:

Basically, as long as you wear green and manage to not get pinched, you’re doing pretty well.

Here’s to a happy St. Patrick’s Day! Treat yourself this March 17.
