Tunstall’s girls basketball team avenged two January losses against Mecklenburg and GW and brought their record to an even 10-10 this week.
In their first home game in two weeks, Tunstall defeated the visiting Mecklenburg Phoenixes 53-48. This was a big turnaround from the 45-24 loss Tunstall suffered on the road to the same opponent earlier in the season.
Summer Flores was the big scorer or the Trojans with 31 points. Harper Lovelace also put up double digits with 20 points.
Makayla Seabrook and Jachaia Lea were the night’s big rebounders with 10 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
On Saturday night at GW, Tunstall won 38-32 in a close matchup. In a particularly low scoring first half, Tunstall went into halftime down 13-12, but came out in the second half with quick buckets from both Flores and Lovelace.
Seabrook pulled down one of her 10 rebounds for the night followed by a successful put back to put Tunstall up 21-19.
The fourth quarter began with Tunstall up 23-20, but GW scored immediately after an offensive rebound to bring the game within one point again. Lovelace had nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter include a pivotal three-pointer and two free throws to seal the game. Flores also netted 16 points in this game.
Ayah Inge was GW’s leading scorer with 12 points.
Coming Up
Tunstall will travel to Halifax on Feb. 13 and host Bassett on Feb. 17 to finish out regular season play. Due to the two weeks of weather interrupting the season, the Piedmont District will not host a basketball tournament. Any schools eligible for regional play will advance once the regular season is concluded.
