Danville has never been known to get much snow; however, our little town got hit with two inches of ice along with seven inches of snow. This meant that Pittsylvania County Schools called off instruction, and students missed from January 25, 2026 to February 5, 2026, which included five remote learning days. While most students were elated that we missed so much school, some had some mixed opinions.
As the snow rolled in and piled up, some students took advantage of this winter weather. After being stuck in their home, they decided to try something new. While being snowed in, senior Laney Hyatt spent her time drinking plenty of coffee and discovered a new hobby: pilates.
Contrasting with her inside hobby, sophomore Louis Frayez Blanchard, a foreign exchange student from France, spent most of his time in the snow. Since he does not get much snow back in France, he was not sure of what to expect. He said “Building all the snowmen was my favorite part!” and claimed to even love the snow.
While some individuals had an exciting time during the snow break some decided to relax and take in the break, while enjoying the stress-free life. Senior McCall Hollie was asked, “What was your favorite part about being out of school during the snow days?” she stated “Being able to stay home and relax without the stress of school work hanging over my head, and being able to sleep until lunch time”
Though some enjoyed staying in, others were forced to stay home. Senior Victoria Wade said, “I was stuck at home the entire time. My road was messed up from the ice, so I couldn’t get out of my driveway even if I tried. I just did whatever I could to keep me entertained.”
The snow kept many others in, hindering them from going into town. Senior Mason Clark stated, “My truck got stuck in my yard for three whole days, so I could not go out and get food.” He eventually was able to go out and said, “I went to my little cousin’s house to go sledding in the snow.”
Although some worried that the immense amount of days missed would result in make-up days, our new superintendent, Mr. Mayhew, sent a log of which days would be made up and which ones would be bank days. Bank days are days we do not have to make up because they are virtual learning days. There were four bank days and one make-up day, and most students were relieved to know the day would be on president’s day and not added on to the end of the school year.
