Wrestling for a win

Tunstall High School’s wrestling team began to wrap up their season with a strong win on January 20th, celebrating their Senior Night with three victories. “Well, we had some adversity from the weather, but they practiced hard and executed at the matches,” said Coach Trey Devall.

The Trojans defeated Chatham 60-12, Dan River 42-36, and Halifax 54-30. “It was good,” commented junior Mathew Fulcher. “I really like to contribute to the matches, especially Senior Night.” These wins finished out their regular season, leaving their record a successful 23 and 3. “Overall we had a really tough match against Dan River, but I think we stepped it up and stepped it up for the seniors.”

The wrestling team’s undefeated Trojans included Dakota Wilson, David Deane, Bryce Collins, Josh Jerrell, and Mathew Fulcher. Those who also won matches on Senior Night were Andrew Matherly, Chandler Milnter, Willie Hopkins, Nick Hylton, Davis Eades, Zach Prigg, Chad Lovelace, Jacob Snead, and Fletcher Hardy.

“We showed a lot of improvement from last year,” said Devall. “The new kids took it in stride and filled the void [of those graduated].”

The wrestling team will travel to Brookville for the Conference Tournament. Devall’s plans for the Conference include “coming in and practicing hard. The kids know what they need to do at this point in the season.” The tournament means facing up against Liberty-Bedford, Brookville, Rustburg, and Heritage High School on February 5th.
