Athletes prepare for spring tryouts weeks in advance through conditioning. Fundamental exercises, such as running and lifting weights, are performed to strengthen players overall; however, when athletes are compared more specifically, coached must begin making cuts to achieve a well-rounded team.

“We look for athleticism, work ethic, and overall fundamental skills,” said varsity softball coach Caine DeVivi. Out of a total of 28 athletes that tried out for the varsity and/or jayvee softball team, 26 players made the team including 14 jayvee players and 12 varsity.

Baseball coaches had an abundance of  athletes to choose from at this year’s tryout. Forty-four players came out for baseball and only thirty-two were placed on a varsity or jayvee team. Seventeen athletes made varsity while fifteen made jayvee. A player’s ability to get along with former players and if they will work hard to get better are two factors that are considered by coaches when determining an athlete’s placement.

The cuts for the girls’ and boys’ track team are slightly different from other sports. Many athletes come to every practice knowing not everyone will compete in track meets. Throughout the season of track, athletes are continuously working for their places to compete. Twenty-five boys and twenty girls were present at track tryouts.

Girls’ soccer tryouts reflect a regular day’s practice. With 22 athletes coming out for the girls’ soccer team no cuts were needed this year and all 22 potential players made the team.

The competition was tough at boys’ soccer tryouts. Over thirty athletes were present. After cuts were made, a remaining nineteen were placed on the varsity team. “It was nice to have tryouts outside. The last couple of years we’ve been regulated to the gym due to weather,” said senior Junior Lara.

All teams will now work to get ready for scrimmage games which will be played as early as March 8 when the softball team travels to Cave Spring.
