Girls soccer defeats GW Eagles on senior night

On Thursday, May 10, the girls varsity soccer team played their 13th game of the season, which was the last home game of the season. Their current record is 6-5-2.

The Trojans gained the victory over the George Washington Eagles with a final score of 4-3.

At the end of the first quarter the score was 3-1, with Tunstall falling behind. The girls did not let themselves get discouraged and were determined to make a come back in the second quarter.

They did just that.

Only one minute into the second quarter, junior Aleise Thornton scored a goal, putting the score at 2-3.

The Trojans continued to not allow the Eagles to score. With 25 minutes left of the quarter, junior Aleise Thornton made a goal, resulting in a temporary tie of 3-3.

Toward the end of the second quarter, freshman Riley Mills brought the Trojans to a score of 4-3, which remained the same through the rest of the game.

“This is the first time in the 17 years that I’ve been coaching that I’ve had a team come back from a 3-0 start,” said Coach Marc Parrish.

In addition to the excitement of winning, seniors on the team were also recognized at this game.

Seniors included Brenda Arellano, Grey Cappozoli, Leah Dowdy, Allie Gentry, Ali Hill, McKenzie Hill, Alexis Hinds, Grace Touchstone, and Alexis Toufas. They walked across the field escorted by family members and received flowers and balloons. It was an emotional time as most of these girls have spent their entire high school career playing soccer.

“This is the first time, since I’ve been on the team, that Tunstall has beat the opposing team for senior night. And it made it even better that it was GW,” said Toufas.

The girls will be back in action on Friday, May 11 at Bassett High School. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
