Better Call Saul surprises many

Being the prequel to one of the most successful shows in television history comes with its advantages. After all, Breaking Bad has won sixteen Primetime Emmy awards, eight Satellite awards, two Golden Globe awards, and many others. However, it did not set the record for the highest rated scripted series premiere  in basic cable history as Better Call Saul did. 6.9 million people watched the double feature air on February 8 in astonishment, and are eager for the next Monday.

Already the show is a 9.4 on the popular yet very critical movie/show rating website IMDb, and an extraordinary 100% on the even more scathing website Rotten Tomatoes. To say that even the most judgmental critics throughout the country are ecstatic about the show in an understatement.

The dark humor and nostalgia attracted viewers in the masses as they watched the familiar struggles of the new lawyer James McGill continuing his seemingly diminishing career. Though captivated by the past of his growing and dying vocation, everyone felt a sort of sympathy for his present life status.

Vince Gilligan has a gift for giving viewers exactly what they need. Many are skeptical that it will never live up to the success that was Breaking Bad; however, the show surely has been a very pleasant surprise as it creates its own identity.

Set in 2002, seven years before Walter White aided in the destruction that was Saul Goodman, before he was even Saul Goodman, the show develops in many cliff-hangers and ironic moments for our favorite lawyer with the appearances of few characters from Breaking Bad.

Everyone is left with a greedy enthusiasm for coming events. We all want him to be the strong, independent lawyer already, yet no on really wants to skip the details in between.

While it is nice to see the excitement bloom and burst, will the show be able to carry itself when most know the inevitable end that is Saul Goodman? It shows promise and deserves much praise, but will it fill the sequel’s shoes?

One can only know if they tune into on Mondays at nine o’clock pm to watch the drama and danger unfold.
