On Saturday, March 7, the 2015 Military Ball was held at the Agricultural Center in Chatham. Gretna, Chatham, Dan River, Tunstall, and George Washington High School students attended as well as their dates.

Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps, or JROTC, members were invited along with their escorts. This program was created in 1916 as a part of the National Defense Act. Its goal was to encourage high school students to become a better United States’ citizen by volunteering and honoring local veterans.  Tunstall’s Senior Army Instructor is LTC King and the army instructor is SGM Hubert Royall.

The majority of the evening focused on celebrating JROTC’s twentieth anniversary. A table with symbolic objects was set up for the “missing man” ceremony. A senior walk and senior dance was held to recognize those who are graduating this year and even heading on to become a part of the military. Of course, there was dancing to the latest hits, as well.

Freshman Ashley Lewis was escorted by JROTC member, Nick Hylton. This was her first year attending the ball.

“The experience was amazing. It was a lot of fun! My favorite part of the evening was when they allowed everyone to dance freely,” said Lewis.

The night was not only memorable for the seniors, but  for all of those who attended. JROTC members are already anticipating the 2016 Military Ball with high hopes that it will be as exciting as this year’s.
