Dancing with the Students

As the spring season opens, there is only one event all dancers look forward to, their recital.

The Danville Academy of Dance performed their recital on April 23-26 at George Washington High School.

They held their technical rehearsal Monday, April 20. Mrs. Ann Pflugshaupt and Mrs. Lisa Jones complimented the girls and boys on their pre-performance and also fixed and altered a few mistakes along the way.

The following day, they called all dancers back to George Washington High School in full costume, makeup, and their hair pulled back into a bun for dress rehearsals. The dancers performed their routines with full effort one last time before the big show.

This year’s recital theme was “Dance Classics.”There were many routines to songs that have been sung by artists including Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, and The Andrews Sisters.

There were 16 graduating seniors from The Danville Academy of Dance. Emily Kormornik, Alison Turner, Lauren Yoder, and Demi Younger are the graduating seniors from Tunstall.

“On the final night of recital, I felt excited to perform, yet bereaved since it was my last night,” said senior Lauren Yoder.

The following week Meredith Gravely began technical rehearsals for Act 1 on Monday, April 27 and Act 2 on Tuesday, April 28. They ran the dances once and then again for no mistakes. Mrs. Anne Moore, Mrs. Katie Pruitt, and Mrs. Brittany Francis corrected the dances to be clearer for the audience to see.

The next day, the Meredith Gravely dancers had dress rehearsal, they were required to wear their hair in a bun, bold makeup, and costumes for each dance. The practiced their dances once more, just like they would on stage.

The theme of the Meredith Gravely Dance Recital is “Life’s A Dance.” With names of dances such as, “Life’s Greatest Memories”, “Friend’s for Life” and “Story of My Life” as each dance refers back to the theme.

Meredith Gravely will be performing their recital Thursday, April 30 through Sunday, May 3.

“I’ve been dancing for 15 years, so it’s very distressing now that it’s coming to an end,” said senior Journie Walker.

There is 11 seniors total graduating from Meredith Gravely. Victoria Sater, Journie Walker, and Sarah Ricketts are the only seniors from Tunstall.

“It’s very emotional. Recital week is always my favorite but this year it’s so bittersweet because I’m not ready for it to be over,” said senior Victoria Sater.
